As part of my devotional life, I have been reading the Book of Nehemiah and was recently blown away by verse 18 of chapter 2.
And I told them of the hand of my God which had been good upon me, and also of the king’s words that he had spoken to me. So they said, “Let us rise up and build.” Then they set their hands to this good work. Nehemiah 2:18 (NKJV)
In particular the line – So they said, “Let us rise up and build” and I couldn’t help but think that one of the reasons the wall of Jerusalem was built so quickly in 52 days was not just because of the hand of the Lord on Nehemiah and the people, or because of the favour of the king but also because the people said “Let us rise up and build”.
It is a powerful thing when people come together to say ‘Let Us’, whether it is ‘let us’ change the injustice of our nation as was done during the apartheid period in South Africa, or the ‘let us’ build a monument to ourselves like the story of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11). ‘Let Us’ is a powerful statement.
Let us rise up and build !!
God has designed us to live together in community, in a ‘Let’s Us’ environment to help us achieve and do more with our gifts and talents. I believe that mentors and coaches are people in our world that we need to say to ourselves ‘Let Us’ rise up and build together.
Mentors – are people who let you tour their lives.
That said, we need to understand that there is a slight difference between a mentor and coach though both help us to achieve and arrive at our God given destination. Mentors – are people who let you tour their lives. In others words, mentors help to grow and develop the person. A good mentor will not just tell you what needs to be done but also show you what needs to be done to go to the next level. On the other hand, coaches are people who help equip us for the task at hand. Coaches are performance driven and their role is to help us achieve the best results in a particular task.
….coaches are people who help equip us for the task at hand.
And the reality is that we need both mentors and coaches in our lives to help us to be equipped and developed for every season of growth in our lives. Can I encourage if we are going to be truly rise and build in every areas of our lives – our families, our finances, our health, our careers, our personal relationship with God – that we need to have a ‘Let Us’ mindset, where we involve mentors and coaches to help us get to the next level.
The best is yet to come!!
